In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.
But David remained in Jerusalem.
One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her.
The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. Then she went back home. The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”
Oh boy! That escalated quickly.
Tradition required it, the people expected it and God needed him to be leading his men into battle but he stayed home. The narration above clearly states that “at the time when kings go off to war, David remained.” King David wasn’t where he was needed which led him to engage somewhere he wasn't wanted. And it cost him greatly but it cost others even more.
Perhaps King David had come to a point where he felt he had done enough or that he had arrived at the culmination of his goal. Whatever his reasons for staying home, his disengagement in what he was chosen and anointed for as “warrior king” had left him with no tether to his purpose. And it didn’t take long for apathy to lead him down a path of destruction.
We should never find ourselves without a greater goal, a noble cause - a clear calling to fulfill. If we get to the place, either through apathy or success, where we begin to lay back while others do the living we need a new goal!
Little did King David know but he was in more peril of losing his kingdom on his own palace balcony than he would have been on the battlefield with his brothers.
David, as we aware, was only created for forward motion. When by all accounts he was supposed to be marching forward, he remained. “Remaining” is never a safe option for us. Moving forward, eyes on the prize, winning the battle, raising the standard, expanding the Kingdom, those are the touchstones of our tribute to God and our legacy in the earth.
We don’t stay home from the fight! We don’t lay back when there is more territory to take from tyrants! We don’t remain when there is a NEW SPRING for stepping out on the battlefield! WE WERE MADE FOR MORE! 2016 is a new opportunity to engage in the greater goal- the higher calling on our lives. Which begs the question that only we can answer:
IN ANY AREA, HAVE I DISENGAGED OR LEFT IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF MY LIFE AND CALLING UP TO OTHERS?
If we know that there is power in focus, there is no telling how powerful focused prayer can be. Let’s pray this prayer of agreement written by Pastor Kathy Hayes as we move in closer to the greater goal- the highest calling on our lives:
My dearest Heavenly Father- You are my desire. I long for a deeper love and focus on you! I desire to be single minded like dove's eyes, totally and completely centered on you! I give you permission to eliminate all distractions that take precedence over what you plan for me. Thank you for enlarging my capacity to house you in a greater measure. I ask for spiritual insight to be clearer than my natural sight. In Jesus name, Amen!
CALLED ME HIGHER by All Sons and Daughters is a musical prayer of dedication that resonates with our journey today.
