The word EMOTION contains the word MOTION because feelings are fuel that move us. Actions are natural followers when our feelings lead. And unfortunately our feelings aren’t always the most trustworthy leaders. Much of the world often quotes, “FOLLOW YOUR HEART” as a mantra. But according to Jeremiah 17:9, it isn’t a wise one.

“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out.”

The heart is a place where impressions become feelings that result in motivations. Left unchecked, our heart can depend wholly on it’s own counsel and cause us to distrust others and the wisdom of God. Following our heart will ultimately lead to a paranoid and isolated life.

When emotions rule, even kings are made slaves to their own feelings.

King Saul, the first ruler of Israel, expertly exemplifies the downward spiral of following your heart. He was chosen by God and anointed by the Prophet Samuel to lead God’s people in peace and prosperity. Not long after he became king, his kingdom was threatened by the giant, Goliath. His troops were set up in defense but ended up in a standoff that lasted quite a while. A young shepherd boy named David showed up with lunch for his brothers and ended the battle by defeating the giant. King Saul became obsessively jealous of David. He lost sight of who he was- the King of Israel, and instead resorted to strange games and tests of loyalty. His insecurity and distrust drove him mad. In his isolation, Saul couldn’t hear truth and believed no one. He kept only the counsel of his own heart. And in that dark and deceitful place, he lost himself and then his kingdom.

What a waste of a life and an opportunity to make a difference! But such a powerful lesson- that even the highest position cannot afford us security when the heart is selling us out.

The highest position in the land did not insulate Saul from the erosion of his own emotions. He stopped leading when he gave in to jealousy and comparison. All of his decisions and actions became about David and not about the opportunity and responsibility God had given him.

Ponder this question as you read the continuation of the verses below.

“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out.
But I, GOD, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human.
I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be.”
~ Jeremiah 17:9-10 (The Message)

FOCUS IS LOST WHEN WE LET OUR EMOTIONS RULE. Here is a prayer of agreement written by Pastor Kathy Hayes to lead us back to our rightful position of security in Him.

Father, in the name of Jesus.

According to Ephesians 6:10- I am strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

I can build my life and stay focused while engaging in warfare that comes against my purpose. My weapons are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. God has equipped me through putting on the full armor of God! I will stand firm in God's purpose and will. I will witness restoration in everything that matters to me and the Kingdom of God!

The perfect soundtrack for our DEVOTIONAL today is: NO LONGER SLAVES by Bethel. Sing it out and sing it loud! Your heart will follow your lead as you unseat negative thoughts and overrule unhealthy emotions.
